Best Foot Forward

Our Best Foot Forward course is designed to support transition and improve and enhance the S1 experience for all pupils. In line with our school improvement priorities, the course gives our young people the opportunity to develop a variety of skills including literacy and numeracy, with a focus on increasing their awareness of employability skills and future vocational pathways. All aspects of the course are designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors at Braes High School.

The beginning of the course gives our S1 pupils a chance to build positive relationships with the staff of Braes High School, appreciate the value of school ethos, recognise the positive impact being part of a school community has and establish their own core values.

As a school, we ensure every pupil has an equal opportunity to succeed. As success is achieved in many formats, this course provides our young people with the opportunity to share their experiences and achievements both in school and out with school. Our aim is to support our young people to recognise the knowledge and transferrable skills they acquire and, in turn, use them across their different subject areas to achieve success in their learning.

There is an element of Tracking and Monitoring built into the course which allows the Best Foot Forward teacher to monitor the progress of individuals in their class against many indicators including engagement, participation and Health and Wellbeing. The analysis of this data ensures we are improving outcomes for all of our learners and providing them with individualised support where necessary.

By being part of it and engaging with the Best Foot Forward course throughout S1, pupils have the opportunity to achieve the SQA Developing Essential Skills SCQF Award at Level 3.
