School Uniform
We believe that our school uniform plays a positive part in our school culture, contributing to our positive school ethos and helping to create an inclusive and welcoming environment.
Our uniform helps to support equity and inclusion, create routines for pupils to support their school attendance, reduce stigma and peer pressure and support anti-bullying approaches. It also helps us to ensure pupils feel safe at school, supporting our safeguarding measures and identification of strangers on our school premises.
We want our uniform to be fully inclusive and support the diverse range of young people in our school. We use the Equalities Act 2010 to promote equality, including recognising specific matters relating to religion and belief, race, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment and pregnancy and maternity.
We have considered how we ensure it is affordable, comfortable, practical and able to be worn by all. Our uniform was agreed in consultation with parents, pupils, staff and the Parent Council. It incorporates a range of popular items of dress, e.g. sweatshirts, T-shirts.
As a school we strongly encourage school uniform and we really appreciate parents support in the wearing of school uniform at all times.
Our uniform is:
• White/Black school shirt
• School tie (Red for S1-S3, Grey for S4-S6)
• Black or grey trousers/skirt
• Black jumper/cardigan
• Black Braes High School Blazer with school badge.
Access to our social spaces, for all pupils in school, requires full uniform.
Why we want pupils to wear school uniform:
• It promotes a positive image in school and the local community
• It supports our school identity
• It sets the tone for the working day
• It helps identify intruders
The following items are necessary for PE lessons:
• Gym shoes/trainers (if pupils are wearing trainers to school, a different pair must be brought for PE)
• Plain red, white, blue or black T-Shirts
• Red, white or black shorts/Joggers
• Towel (for swimming lessons)
• Swimming trunks or swimsuit
• No football strips, including training tops or international teams
• If pupils are outside they are allowed to bring a jacket, jumper, gloves and hat.
The appropriate clothing and footwear for PE is necessary for health and safety reasons and your co-operation is requested to ensure that pupils are equipped to participate in the PE lessons.
The following items are NOT allowed in school
• Tops with offensive slogans
• Football tops or scarves
• Caps/hats within the school building
• Tracksuits
• Denims
• Crop Tops
Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled, particularly ties, sweat shirts and PE equipment which are often lost. A protective apron or an old shirt should be worn for art and craft activities. Please help the school and the education authority by making sure that pupils do not bring valuable or expensive items of clothing to school.
In certain circumstances, appropriate clothing will be necessary for school activities for safety reasons, e.g. in games areas, science laboratories, technical workshops; this extends to the wearing of suitable footwear and even, on occasion, to the length of pupils’ hair and the wearing of jewellery and earrings.
Offensive clothing such as T-shirts or other items featuring inappropriate language or illustrations is not permitted. Football colours are also inappropriate as they can lead to incidents of rivalry.
If you have any queries regarding the school’s dress code, please contact the appropriate Pastoral Head.
