Learning & Teaching
Learning, Teaching & Assessment
Learning, teaching & assessment at Braes High School is firmly based on our moto of "Build Respect and Earn Success". We believe that all pupils are capable of earning success and strive to build relationships to ensure that, as a school community, we work together to gain them this success.
We aim to utilise our shared understanding of how best to ensure excellence in learning and teaching across the school community. Our learning, teaching & assessment framework has been created in collaboration with learners, staff and parents. Furthermore, our policy supports effective pedagogy in our school which informs both our self-evaluation and professional learning approaches. We also aim to ensure a variety of assessment strategies are employed to ensure that all young people can showcase their knowledge, understanding and progress.

Professional Learning
Braes High School runs an extensive programme of in-house CLPL sessions led by staff. This involves a mix of both virtual and in-person sessions where staff use their expertise on a range of learning and teaching strategies. The aim of these sessions is to recognise strengths within our current teaching practice and share these across the school. Our CLPL programme is informed by pupil voice, parental feedback and staff observations.
Moving forward, we are happy to support colleagues in other schools with any questions they may have on specific sessions we have delivered. As part of our reflective practices, we would welcome collegiate working and the sharing of good practice.
Self-Evaluation Leaders
A major driver for continued development of Learning and Teaching lies in the self-evaluation processes within the school. We have rigorous self-evaluation procedures to ensure that we have that positive impact and change within our learning and teaching.
Key to this are our Self-Evaluation Leaders. This group is made up of young people from S1-S6. Across the school year they participate in and lead some of the following;
• Creating pupil surveys about learning & teaching
• Accompanying staff on learning walks around the school
• Presenting to staff about their observations on learning & teaching
• Supporting staff working groups with improvement planning
If you have a young person who would like to be involved in this please tell them to discuss it with Mr Yeates, or any member of staff.
